Common milkweed is native to North America and can be easily established with little effort. They are a very hardy plant that can survive harsh conditions like drought, flooding, and even comeback year after year with lows getting in the -20F range. Seeds must have a winterized period so these will need stratification (a cold period either done inside your refrigerator or planted directly in the fall and left to overwinter on its own). These have one the most amazing smelling blooms you will ever come across. When they come into bloom on our property I can easily smell them 40 yards or more away. They have large beautiful round soft lilac colored flower heads that attract an abundance of wildlife. One thing is the famous Monarch butterfly who uses the plant to lay their eggs on. The young caterpillars eat the foliage, growing rapidly, and eventually finds a hiding place to create it's chrysalis. We've been slowly establishing our "milky way" forest for 10 years. We've studied, cared, and released many butterflies from our property. A great addition to a native landscape.
